Medical Admission 2026: GPA Requirement Likely to Be Lowered This Year

Medical Admission 2026 GPA Requirement

A few days ago, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare announced the Medical Admission test schedule for the session 2025-2026. The exam will be held on December 12, 2025 with new format along with the MCQ.

Meanwhile, a new information announced on Thursday (October 23) regarding the GPA Requirements. The GPA requirement for admission to government and private medical and dental colleges may be lowered this year.

According to reliable sources, the authorities are considering this move to align with the current academic realities. A final decision on this matter will be made at a meeting scheduled next week at the Ministry of Health Education and Family Welfare.

Officials from the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BM&DC) and the Directorate General of Health Education (DGME) said this year’s HSC and equivalent exam results were prepared based on realistic standards. The new evaluation system focused more on merit and less on grade numbers.

As a result, both the number of GPA-5 students and the overall pass rate have gone down. For this reason, the government may relax the GPA requirements for medical and dental admission this year.

An official from the DGME told;

“Students who got GPA 4 this year are almost equal to those who scored GPA 4.5 before. Even students with GPA 4.5 this year are considered better than those who got GPA 5 in previous years.”

He added that because of this change, the GPA requirement for admission might be slightly lowered.

“Instead of a combined GPA of 9 in SSC and HSC, it could be set at 8. However, the final decision will be taken in next week’s ministry meeting.”

Currently, students need a total GPA of 9 (SSC + HSC) to apply for medical and dental colleges. If the proposal is approved, the new minimum requirement will be GPA 8, report The Daily Campus.

This adjustment is being considered to ensure that capable students are not left out due to the tougher grading standards introduced this year.

The Ministry of Health Education and Family Welfare will make the final call at the upcoming meeting. Once the decision is confirmed, an official notice will be published on the DGME and BM&DC websites.

Note that, this year HSC and Equivalent Results witness a huge drop in both pass rate and GPA-5. A total of 58.83% passed in the exam among 12,51,111 candidates.
