Shattila Ekadashi Parana Rules
Those observing a vrat on the Ekadashi Tithi follow a set of rules. Ardent devotees remain awake all night to pay obeisance to Lord Vishnu. Devotees read the Vishnu Sahasranam, sing hymns, and chant mantras dedicated to the Lord hailed as the ‘protector of the universe’.
But those who take rest on the night of Ekadashi, must rise early, preferably during Brahma Muhurat (around two hours before sunrise) on the next day. Check out the Parana rules shared below:
- Take a bath and wear clean clothes.
- Do Dhyana (Meditation)
- Light an oil lamp and incense.
- Invoke Lord Vishnu.
- Chant the ‘OM Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya’ Mantra with utmost sincerity, dedication and unshakable faith.
- Offer water, flowers and bhog (fruits or sweets or any other Sattvic food preparation) to the deity.
- Seek forgiveness for any error that you may have committed during the vrat.
- Offer food without onion/garlic to the needy.
- Donate essentials to the poor/underprivileged. Break your fast only after donating food/essentials to the needy.
- The fast must be broken during the time frame mentioned above.
- The food prepared for Parana must not contain onion, garlic or any other tamasic ingredient. Break your fast by consuming only Sattvic foods.
ষটতিলা একাদশী ব্রত মাহাত্ম্য
মাঘ মাসের কৃষ্ণপক্ষের ‘ষটতিলা’ একাদশীর মাহাত্ম্য ভবিষ্যোত্তরপুরাণে বর্ণিত আছে। যুধিষ্ঠির মহারাজ বললেন- হে জগন্নাথ! মাঘ মাসের কৃষ্ণপক্ষের একাদশী তিথির নাম কি, বিধিই বা কি এবং তার কি ফল, সবিস্তারে বর্ণনা করুন।
তদুত্তরে ভগবান বললেন- হে রাজন! এই একাদশী ‘ষটতিলা’ নামে জগতে বিদিত। একসময় দালভ্য ঋষি মুনিশ্রেষ্ঠ পুলস্তকে জিজ্ঞাসা করেন- মর্ত্যলোকে মানুষেরা ব্রহ্মহত্যা, গোহত্যা, অন্যের সম্পদ হরণ আদি পাপকর্ম দ্বারা নরকে গমন করে। যাতে তারা নরক গতি থেকে রক্ষা পায়, তা যথাযথভাবে আমাকে উপদেশ করুন। অনায়াসে সাধন করা যায় এমন কোন কাজের মাধ্যমে যদি তাদের এই পাপ থেকে উদ্ধারের কোন উপায় থাকে, তবে তা বলুন।
ঋষি পুলস্ত্য বললেন, হে মহাভাগ! তুমি একটি গোপনীয় উত্তম বিষয়ের প্রশ্ন করেছ। মাঘ মাসে শুচি, জিতেন্দ্রিয়, কাম, ক্রোধ আদি শূন্য হয়ে স্নানের পর সর্বদেবেশ্বর শ্রীকৃষ্ণের পূজা করবে। পূজাতে কোন বিঘ্ন ঘটলে কৃষ্ণনাম স্মরণ করবে। রাত্রিতে অর্চনান্তে হোম করবে। তারপর চন্দন, অগুরু, কর্পুর ও শর্করা প্রভৃতি দ্বারা নৈবেদ্য প্রস্তুত করে ভগবানকে নিবেদন করবে। কুষ্মান্ড, নারকেল অথবা একশত গুবাক দিয়ে অর্ঘ্য প্রদান করবে ‘কৃষ্ণ কৃষ্ণ কৃপালুস্তমগতীনাং গতির্ভব’ ইত্যাদি মন্ত্রে শ্রীকৃষ্ণের পূজা করতে হয়। ‘কৃষ্ণ আমার প্রতি প্রীত হোন’ বলে যথাশক্তি ব্রাহ্মণকে জলপূর্ণ কলস, ছত্র, বস্ত্র, পাদুকা, গাভী ও তিলপাত্র দান করবে। স্নান, দানাদি কার্যে কালো তিল অত্যন্ত শুভ।
হে দ্বিজত্তম! ঐ প্রদত্ত তিল থেকে পুনরায় যে তিল উৎপন্ন হয়, ততো বছর দানকারী স্বর্গলোকে বাস করে। তিলদ্বারা স্নান, তিল শরীরে ধারণ, তিল জলে মিশিয়ে তা দিয়ে তর্পণ, তিল ভোজন এবং তিল দান- এই ছয় প্রকার বিধানে সর্বপাপ বিনষ্ট হয়ে থাকে। এই জন্য এই একাদশীর নাম ষটতিলা।
